From the north

(approached from Accrington, Blackburn, Burnley, Clitheroe, Preston, Lancaster and the M65)

  • From the M65/Junction 8, take the A56/Accrington Bypass south towards the M66 and Manchester. At the large roundabout junction with the A680/Blackburn Road (which goes to Accrington) continue again on the A56 dual carriageway. Go past Carrs Industrial Estate on the right and take the turnoff signposted for Todmorden/Bacup/Rawtenstall. At the exit (traffic lights) go straight ahead onto the A681.
  • Go past the Sykeside Hotel on the left and past Rossendale General Hospital on the left. After another half-mile, you will come to a roundabout, which is in Rawtenstall itself. Take the second main exit off the roundabout (the only exit with traffic lights), which is signposted for Bacup. The Queens Arms Hotel is on the corner. This is the start of Bacup Road.
  • Go past the bus station on the right, past a cricket ground and a small Health Centre on the left. After another quarter of a mile, you will come to a small roundabout. Go straight ahead – we are 100 yards along on the left opposite the Ashworth Arms pub. From the south

(approached from Manchester, Bolton, Stockport, Liverpool, Leeds, M60/ Manchester Ring Road and M62)

  • From M60/Junction 18, take the M66 north towards Bury/Burnley. Follow this road north past Junction 1/Summerseat, past the Edenfield junction (entry-only, no exit).
  • Just after Edenfield, you will start to go down into a large valley (Rossendale Valley) and you will come a left turnoff for the A56/ Accrington Bypass. Go straight on past this – your road is now called the A682. After one mile, you will come to a large roundabout, which is in Rawtenstall itself. Take the third main exit off the roundabout (it is the only exit with traffic lights), which is signposted for Bacup. The Queens Arms Hotel is on the corner. This is the start of Bacup Road (A681).

From the south

(approached from Manchester, Bolton, Stockport, Liverpool, Leeds, M60/ Manchester Ring Road and M62)

  • From M60/Junction 18, take the M66 north towards Bury/Burnley. Follow this road north past Junction 1/Summerseat, past the Edenfield junction (entry-only, no exit).
